creating our urban woodland retreat!

sorry! this is becoming long... i'm excited, and i thought i share!
i tried to reduce some of my witting  as i go, by adding links to albums and pages that help explain without more "yadah yadha" :)

we are finally doing real work on our garden!

and this girl's got to dream before it can be accomplished someday!

so far the "urban woodland" of ours has been planted with easy to relocate (mostly) FREE plants.  now that we are inching into that space i'm starting to define the dream of what it should be, and it sounds like this:

a dreamy breeze "haven" for us, and wildlife... us includes negro the panther cat (not very bird+lizard friendly) and our allen hummingbird   -who has lived with us since day one (or its offspring)... and fights his family from the feeder (fun sight from our bed).  we have an amicable relationship of mutual respect and admiration :) ha!

for that we are adding a deck (12'x18') and lawn or gravel or bit of both play area of matching proportuions, and terracing off into the garden slope.

so what plants?

honestly i love the free plants. the agave (majority is the soft kind -very kid safe) and the aloes  with its red flowers that hummingbirds love and which rise tall safe -from negro!!!!!!!!

drought tolerant a must. CA native a huge plus.

YELLOW: my fav flower color.
WHITE: and variegated make the dark areas feel bright

most everything hummingbird flower is negro reachable.... so! i got an idea:

train vines on a future swing/hammock frame.  swing under the hummingbirds flying around you... like you are a fairy!

favorite vines for that:

lonicera smells so good!
yellow trumpet vine is just happy

how to make it look as breezy as it feels and as cloud like as possible?
fill the space with white cloud muhly!  which will also help hide the ugly houses below!

and aim to add more California natives as possible, from this list: sages!

OK enough. sorry for invading you all!

Bring your kid to work day

I have a garden in Santa Barbara again. It's 2 hours drive going up.
And with traffic (leaving any time after 230pm) is 3 hours back. Add
2.5 hours of site meetings. My chances of being late for pick up
where too close for comfort. Been there. Done that.

So! I took the monkey with me. She was so wonderful at the
work-garden. Played happily with her toys and drawings and then my
cell (her quietest time). Joined our meeting a few times. People
enjoyed her presence.

Then we gabbed lunch by the beach.
She wanted to swim in the ocean so much she wasn't interested in her
hot dog. But then she saw the seagulls had the opposite idea!!
Finally we swam and she giggled so much it was priceless!

It was wonderful. And will repeat again.

Yay!

All 3 of us !

Mommy on the left. Laurel in the middle. Dah dah on the right. Yay!!!

Our first stitches! :/

She had a fall at the end of the day at school, I was there. Saw it.
Knew immediately after I saw what happened that she would need 2
stitches.

3.5 hours later, with the help of her bunny Sugar, one "chicky" friend
that dah dah made, and the travel activity book from Osborne that we
got for our east coast road trip, we were all able to enjoy late night
Ihop pancakes and live to tell the tale!

She's a happy camper this morning although she can't smile to hard
cause it hurts.

Hugs :)

LCV's graduation 2014 - pix

here are Martha's pictures of the school graduation.
Unlike last (first) year, laurel actually stood in the stage and sang and danced... but she often would get distracted and space out! (that's in my genetics!)

i will hopefully upload our few videos of the action for you to enjoy soon!

hugs!

Happy 4th of July!

We had fun at our preschool friends pool. Baked a pie and made ice
cream with our peaches!

It's my first 4th as a citizen and in US soil (last year we were in
the DR!). The tall boy was just for show... I was making peach juice
and California Pinot Grigio mixes. It was delicious!

Thought my parents would get a kick of te display at our local super
market: a flag of blueberries, strawberries and coconuts!

Glowing angel

Magic of light and a cute monkey
